When it comes to notable bag designs in fashion history, the Lady Dior is in a league of its own. The story behind the now iconic bag began when the First Lady of France presented Lady Diana with an unreleased design from Dior in 1995. Later that year, a photo of the Princess carrying the bag in Buenos Aires started circulating globally, and the rest was history. The bag, first called the Chouchou, was later renamed after her.
It’s no wonder, then, that Dior would present a touring exhibition dedicated to the storied design. Titled Lady Dior House, the event—which will show in Singapore from 18 July to 11 August 2024—stars a retrospective dedicated to Lady Dior Art, an initiative launched in 2016 challenging creatives around the world to reimagine the Dior symbol with their unique visions.
Think: Mariko Mori’s futuristic take on the design depicting the landscape of ālaya—Buddhism’s eighth consciousness—which shifts and changes as the bag moves, and another iteration that features a miniature Lady Dior captured in an iridescent bubble.
Then there’s Cameroonian-born artist Ludovic Nkoth, who reinterpreted the Lady Dior with jewellery-making techniques, adorning the house’s emblematic cannage design with enamel seashells and tiny gold masks. The lining of the bags showcase vibrant paintings from his ‘System’ series.
The works by Nkoth and Mori will be shown alongside pieces by other artists like Ha Chong-Hyun and Lee Kun-Yong at the Lady Dior House exhibition. Local artists Samuel Xun, Genevieve Chua and Grace Tan have also been invited by the house to share their new visions for the Lady Dior, which you’ll be able to see at the event.
