When it comes to reformulating or relaunching iconic skincare products, it can be a risky endeavour. If something is a best-seller with legions of loyal fans, why fiddle with it?

But with emerging technology and advances in delivery systems, it’s also often necessary to ensure products are as effective as possible – given as the texture, scent and benefits remain.

In recent years it’s been done by Estee Lauder with Advanced Night Repair and Dior with Capture Totale Le Sérum – both of which were well received. Just a few weeks ago, La Mer also took the plunge, reformulated its iconic Moisturising Soft Cream to include a new delivery system involving  thousands of moisture-filled spheres that carry the hero ingredient (Miracle Broth) into the deeper layers of the skin.

The cushiony, melting texture is the same, as is the famed subtle scent. It’s still packed with all the same ingredients (lime tea extract for an antioxidant boost, shea butter for moisture retention, essential oils for a luxe application experience), but the addition of the moisture spheres ensures long-lasting hydration, an instant skin-plumping effect and the anti-ageing benefits La Mer is loved for.

Some might be quick to call out La Mer as over-priced (a 60ml tub will set you back a cool $625), but with 50 year’s of research and countless famous fans (Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and Chrissy Teigen have all raved about La Mer, in particular, the infamous Creme de La Mer original face cream), the enduring appeal is alive and well.
