Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel once said: “If you’re sad, add more lipstick and attack.”

While it’s true that a slash of lipstick can brighten up your face—and mood—in an instant, we’re more so proponents of makeup as experimental artistry, with lipstick being a perennial staple for this form of self-expression.

It’s also true that some lipsticks are better than others: some might have the perfect shade but have a formula that’s too dry or emollient, while others transfer and fade quickly.

But the newest addition to our collection, the Guerlain Rouge G Velvet lipstick, might just be the perfect one.

We would be amiss to not mention the innovative packaging—the refill cartridges are paired with interchangeable cases featuring a mirror and designs like leopard prints, pebbled leather and tortoiseshell and more—but the real star here is the weightless formula of the matte lipstick.

Guerlain Makeup Creative Director Violette (better known as her online persona violette_fr) reinvented the formula this year to feel more comfortable than ever. Enter: the new ultra-care version of the brand’s Rouge G lipsticks in 40 satin and velvet matte shades that boasts an “ultra-light texture for a bare-lips sensation”.

One swipe alone imparts high-impact, full coverage colour, though you can continue to layer the product on without unevenness or the product clinging to any dry spots. This quality makes the Rouge G Velvet lipstick an easy option to work with when reapplying after meals.

While other lipsticks may feel waxy or creamy upon application, thereafter drying into a matte finish, this one goes on matte and powder-like, with no gritty residue or dryness after, which means minimal downtime before moving onto the next step of your routine. The finish is matte without looking flat or dull thanks to the colour-boosting Abyssinian oil in the formula.

The shape of the tip is also well-thought out: there’s a flat surface to cover more area quickly, while the sharp edges allow precise strokes to sculpt the perfect cupid’s bow.

But does this formula transfer? The pigment does transfer a little onto other surfaces when freshly applied, but it affects your look minimally, with very little fading. The lipstick is also certified by us to be a long-wearing one, claiming “16-hour comfort”.

The lipstick has a powdery floral scent, which is something you might want to look out for if you’re sensitive to scented products.

The standout option in Rouge G Velvet’s line of 40 shades? 880 Le Rouge Rubris (or Ruby Red) is described as a “bluish red”, and true to its name, is a brilliant cool-toned jewel-like red that brightens the complexion in person. And while a red lip has the reputation of being high-maintenance and to be worn with formal wear, it’s a quick way to instantly add polish and elevate a casual pairing of a T-shirt and jeans.

If warmer hues of red, a ‘90s-esque brown or neutrals are more your speed, see the full range of Guerlain’s Rouge G lipsticks here.
