It’s no secret that globally, we are becoming more and more sleep deprived. Singapore is constantly ranked in the top ten countries not getting enough sleep, with more than 50 per cent of the population getting less than seven hours of sleep a night. With research proving that sleep is closely tied to mental health, it’s no surprise that more travellers are weaving rest and recovery into their holiday plans.

Dubbed “sleep vacations,” this rising trend centres on holidays purposefully designed to help people rest, reset, and restore healthier sleep habits. Instead of jam-packed itineraries and sightseeing, these getaways focus on deeply restorative experiences—from scientifically backed sleep programs and therapeutic spa treatments to sleep-supportive amenities like blackout rooms, aromatherapy, sound therapy, and temperature control. Many also include wellness rituals such as yoga, meditation, and mindfulness, along with nutrition plans tailored to support circadian rhythms.

Cyndi Hui, Skyscanner’s travel trends and destination expert confirms this trend, noting it has been reflected in online searches on the site. “Sleep tourism is a growing trend in a world that feels busier and harder to switch off from,” she says. She notes that in Singapore, the number of people searching online for sleep retreats (and asking what they are) has increased, with over half of Singapore travellers keen to embark on a sleep retreat as a holiday according to Skyscanner data. She has also noticed many hotels have been quick to jump on offerings related to better sleep.

The Conrad Bali has been offering their Sway Sleep Journey since June 2023. “We recognised the majority of our guests travel from busy cities and use their stay as an escape from their daily routine,” says Kadek Dian Arini, Conrad Bali’s spa manager. “The Sway experience was created through extensive research and incorporation of  scientifically-backed techniques  to promote restful sleep.” The response was so overwhelmingly positive that they decided to make it a permanent offering on their spa menu. It can be experienced as both a private treatment or as a group.

For some hotels, prioritising sleep starts in-room. At Como Metropolitan Singapore, their Sleep Dreams package includes a digital sleep assessment by a sleep coach from Somnus Sleep Wellness plus access to the spa’s hyperbaric oxygen chamber and ice baths which enhance sleep quality and aid in natural healing. It also features a SleepHub in the room. Developed by Cambridge Sleep Sciences, the machine uses audio technology to help retrain the brain and support healthy sleep patterns.

When Grand Hyatt Singapore reopened in 2024, it launched their “Sleep at Hyatt” initiative which included in-room aromatherapy, teas and guided mindfulness to help guests unplug. While the campaign has concluded, the hotel adopted elements of it long term such as calming teas, lighter meal options, and ingredients selected for their nourishing and restorative properties.

Treatments at the newly reopened Damai Spa within the hotel also include sleep-supportive options such as The Recovery, which realigns the body’s natural rhythms, and The Waves, a multi-sensory experience that uses vibroacoustic therapy and calming soundscapes to guide the body into a meditative state.

Thea Wong, Grand Hyatt Singapore’s Director of Well-being, believes a restful hotel experience is a trend that will be sticking around. “Interest is growing, and we see clear momentum as more travellers begin to view quality rest as essential to their overall wellbeing,” she says. “This understanding informs how we design rest-centric experiences—not just through spa rituals or sleep-supportive amenities, but by creating an environment that invites guests to slow down, reset, and experience sleep as something truly transformative and restorative.”

Whether it’s through cutting-edge tech, ancient wellness rituals, or simply the promise of a good night’s sleep, hotels are redefining what it means to truly recharge. For today’s traveller, the most meaningful souvenir might just be waking up feeling like yourself again—rested, reset, and ready to reenter the world.
