A sea of navy gowns has taken over the red carpet at the 2025 Venice Film Festival.

At the film premiere of Jay Kelly, Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher made headlines in a navy Dior bustle gown designed by Jonathan Anderson—offering our first look at his haute couture for the French fashion house. The Testament Of Ann Lee star Amanda Seyfried arrived to the red carpet in a Prada navy silk gown topped with a red bow. Actresses Alicia Vikander and Stacy Martin both donned custom Louis Vuitton gowns in the deep blue hue. Even Julia Roberts, who made her Venice Film Festival debut this year, traded a classic black evening gown for a navy number designed by Versace’s new creative director Dario Vitale. The Hollywood star was clad in the same dress when she received a standing ovation for her role in Luca Guadagnino’s new film, After The Hunt.

Navy was also the go-to hue for suits, as seen on Jessica Williams, who wore a tailored ensemble by Giorgio Armani, and Greta Lee, who flaunted another one of Anderson’s Dior Bar Jackets. Amanda Seyfried also borrowed and re-wore one of Julia Roberts’s Versace ensembles for the festival, comprising a navy blazer, a yellow striped shirt and jeans. (Other shades of blue were spotted at the film festival, including the “iris” of Zhao Tao’s custom Prada dress and the baby blue of Emily Blunt’s Schiaparelli gown.)

The appeal of navy is obvious: it’s timeless, neutral and flatters an array of skintones. But the emerging colour trend also points to how celebrities are moving away from flashy fashions and shocking colours and towards a more sophisticated style of dressing on the red carpet.

Christian Dior would certainly have approved. “Among all the colors, navy blue is the only one which can ever compete with black, it has all the same qualities,” wrote the French couturier in his book, The Little Dictionary of Fashion. It looks like the new generation of leading fashion designers, including Dior successor Jonathan Anderson, is taking notes.

Ahead, discover some of the best navy looks we spotted at the Venice Film Festival 2025.
