The 82nd Venice International Film Festival is officially underway, bringing us its trademark blend of the year’s most anticipated films alongside the awards circuit’s most dramatic red carpet moments. The Hollywood set has embraced the prestigious festival’s penchant for fashion drama with bold, sweeping silhouettes and vivid colours—but the stars hailing from closer to home have chosen a slightly different route.
Asian cinema is well-represented at this year’s festival, with the lineup including upcoming films from Shu Qi and Park Chan-Wook. Decision to Leave director Chan-Wook’s black comedy No Other Choice is a strong contender for the coveted Golden Lion, with The Guardian describing it as “the best film in the Venice competition so far.” The film stars Lee Byung-Hun, Son Ye-Jin, and Park Hee-Soon, following an unemployed paper worker who turns to violence to claw his way back into the job market.
The all-star ensemble cast’s Venice looks have been quietly stunning. During the photocall, Son’s nude dress with silver and sage green embroidery subtly complemented leading man Lee’s slate grey suit. Later in the day, on the red carpet, Son opted for a glittering black mesh dress that was show-stopping in its simplicity.
Greta Lee also brought us more subtly striking looks as she promoted the upcoming Late Fame. Lee’s minimalist red carpet fashion never disappoints, but this slate of looks is especially notable for the glimpse it offers us into Jonathan Anderson’s Dior. Lee was particularly fond of Anderson’s Loewe looks during her awards campaign for Past Lives, and it seems she has followed the renowned designer to his new post. Lee was seen in two cleanly structured and colour-coordinated Dior ensembles: the first an all-white jacket and miniskirt embellished with subtle Dior logos; the second a tailored black silk jacket and A-line skirt.
