As the stars gather to celebrate major cinematic releases, the red carpet becomes a performance of its own

Cinema may take centre stage at the Toronto International Film Festival, but make no mistake: its red carpet is a performance all of its own. Fresh from the glittering canals of Venice, Hollywood’s brightest names have descended on Canada’s cultural capital for 10 days of premieres, panels and the subtle sartorial glamour that’s become synonymous with TIFF. This year, there’s so much to anticipate. From Rian Johnson’s latest Knives Out whodunnit starring Kerry Washington and Josh O’Connor, Chloé Zhao’s sweeping take on Hamnet starring Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, and Nia DaCosta’s bold queer reimagining of Hedda Gabler starring Tessa Thompson, the festivities have drawn a particularly starry crowd.

Already, the fashion has been nothing short of theatrical. Anya Taylor-Joy, ever the couture chameleon, teased Jonathan Anderson’s highly anticipated Dior womenswear debut in a look that felt like a curtain-raiser in itself. Meanwhile, Charli XCX leaned into her nightlife sensibilities with a carousel of party dresses.

While the events are still ongoing, the festival’s opening days have delivered a steady stream of boundary-pushing ensembles worthy of as much analysis as the films they precede. As the 2025 TIFF continues to unfold, we’ll be keeping tabs on every glittering entrance.
