Strokes of Jean-ius: Three Creatives Recall Individualism As Echoed By Levi’s® 501®s

To echo the individualism of Levi’s® iconic 501®s, three Singaporean creatives—Julie Lieu, Iman Fandi and Dewy Choo—recall the ways they stay true to who they are

There are jeans, and then there are Levi’s® 501®s.

Built on the foundations of workwear and durability, the 150-year legacy of the straight-legged, button-fly finished icon has always been one of individuality. Distinguished with hard-wearing copper rivets and worn by everyone from rebels to royalty—including the singular subjects in this story: Iman Fandi, Julie Lieu and Dewy Choo. These three exceptional women are learning to chart their own paths and are finding new ways to become the best, most authentic versions of themselves.

What do you hope to champion as a young creative?
I hope to inspire people to take risks and dream big. I believe that fear only shows us how much we care about something and that the only thing that can stop you from challenging yourself is you. Nobody’s voice and opinion is more important than your own.

How do you stay authentic to yourself?
Trends come and go, but being able to go through life and navigate what I like and dislike through trial and error has taught me lessons about myself, and that has allowed me to stay authentic. Of course, I like to challenge myself and evolve to be better; I am still always learning more every day.

How would you rock a pair of 501® jeans your own way?
I would take a pair of denim low cut jeans and pair it with a white singlet, accessorise it with black kitten heels that are embellished with crystals all over, and pair that with a matching black bag. I’d also add layers of necklaces and rings, and hoop earrings. Finish off with a glowy makeup look and you’re good to go!

In three words, how would you describe the Levi’s® 501®s?
Stylish, iconic, timeless.

What do you hope to champion as a young creative?
As a young creative, my triumph would be to motivate and inspire all kinds of people.

How do you stay authentic to yourself?
Mindfulness is something I often remind myself to practise. Nothing is more striking than being authentic.

Dewy Choo, Internet personality

In three words, how would you describe the Levi’s® 501®s?
Fitting, easy and comfortable.

How do you define self-expression?
Self-expression is staying true to yourself and not being influenced by all the noise around you, and just listening to the inner voice inside you that tells you what to do—just trust yourself and your gut!

How do you stay authentic to yourself?
I hope that in all my stories, skits, and even jokes I make, it inspires someone out there!
