New York Fashion Week may have wrapped up this week, but the city hosted one of its most glamorous evenings on September 11 for the MTV VMAs. Summoning some of the music industry’s most lauded talents, the Video Music Awards has become infamous for its daring red carpet where it’s ‘go big or go home’ and anything goes.

Now in its fourth decade (the first-ever VMAs was held in 1984!), the awards ceremony has a rich history of platforming new artists, celebrating veterans and a fair share of controversial moments.

This year sees the awards’ bold fashion streak continue, with Sabrina Carpenter resurrecting a vintage Bob Mackie number that was originally donned by Madonna at the 1991 Academy Awards, Chappell Roan laying down her own carpet (sword in tow), and Paris Hilton in a shredded version of her famed 21st birthday look.
