Louis Vuitton’s Future Nostalgia For Spring/Summer 2024

This season, the luxury fashion brand blends ‘80s glamour with the spirited sportswear of the now

Louis Vuitton creative director Nicolas Ghesquière has a knack for time travelling through his designs, tapping on a wealth of references across different decades. For Spring/Summer 2024, the fashion designer drew heavily on the big shoulders and extravagant volumes of the ‘80s, while infusing his collection with the versatility and lightness of modern-day sportswear. As Ghesquière said in an interview, “Vuitton is a luxury brand but it’s about function, it provides a service: to travel better. Mobility is important in clothes.” The result were standout clothes that allow you to move and travel with freedom—even the colourful leather jackets with their ballooning sleeves, or the sculptural minidresses with ruffles on their shoulders, or the satin blouses that are padded to unexpected proportions. As impressive as the clothes are, they didn’t take away from the allure of this season’s accessories. That includes the Louis Vuitton Around Me PM Monogram handbag, whose striking silhouette nods to the French luxury brand’s LV Circle signature. There’s also the GO-14 MM bag, whose pillowy exterior pairs perfectly with the inflated jackets and tops of the collection. By playing with contrasting ideas—the past versus the present, volume versus lightness—Ghesquière conjures a collection that feels familiar and yet breathes new life into our closets.
