H&M is known for its buzzy designer collaborations, and it’s preparing to bring more can’t-miss styles to the masses thanks to its latest mash-up with the house of Mugler, in the H&M X Mugler collaboration.
The partnership was first announced in February, and now the brand has revealed that the collection by Mugler creative director Casey Cadwallader will include womenswear, menswear and accessories. It will launch online and in select stores beginning May 11.
The collaboration has been in the works since before founding designer Manfred Thierry Mugler’s passing in January 2022. According to H&M’s creative advisor, Ann-Sofie Johansson, “We are proud to celebrate the legacy of Manfred Thierry Mugler with this collection. We were all honored to get to know Manfred, and it feels very special that he was involved at the initial stages together with Casey and the house of Mugler.” In an official release, she continued, “Casey has done such an incredible job at paying homage to history, and to the archive, while making the collection totally contemporary. Under him, Mugler has become one of the most innovative and exciting houses on today’s fashion landscape.”
As the French fashion house’s creative director since 2018, Cadwallader has reintroduced Mugler to a new generation of fashion fans while maintaining the brand’s original DNA, appealing to a new roster of A-list clientele from Kylie Jenner and Megan Thee Stallion, to Cardi B and Dua Lipa.
“It is truly an honor to collaborate with H&M,” he said in a statement. “The collection is a celebration of everything that defines Mugler as a house and each piece is authentic Mugler, from the bodysuits, which have become a signature of ours, to the sharp tailoring and worked denims. It is a showcase of our icons.”
The collection will blend style notes from the house’s heritage signatures with a contemporary perspective. Featuring strong shoulders, cinched waists, and form-fitting silhouettes, the assortment will also include a series of special, limited-edition archival remakes, hand-selected by Cadwallader to cement the brand’s reinvigorated resonance and “their testimony to Mugler’s central role in the glory years of ’80s and ’90s catwalk drama,” per the release.
In celebration of the collab and an ode to the fashion house’s close ties with the music industry, Mugler and H&M have released a music video starring a brigade of rising stars from Amaarae and Shygirl to Eartheater and Arca, who have recorded their own take on Stardust’s 1998 dance hit song, “Music Sounds Better With You.”
The Mugler x H&M capsule collection follows a notable line-up of other high-end designer partnerships for the retailer, which has included Karl Lagerfeld in 2004, Comme des Garçons in 2008 and Versace in 2011, among many others.
It’s been a busy few months for Mugler, which presented its Fall/Winter 2022 collection to a live audience for the first time in three years in January. Cadwallader enlisted a star-studded list of models to usher his sultry and futuristic designs down the catwalk, including comedian Ziwe Fumudoh and supermodels Amber Valletta, Shalom Harlow and Eva Herzigova.
In November of last year, the Brooklyn Museum celebrated opening night of the sprawling exhibition, Thierry Mugler: Couturissime, marking the first retrospective on the late founding designer.
Last month, Mugler announced that Euphoria actress Hunter Schafer would be the new face of iconic fragrance, Angel.
Mark your calendars for May 11.
