The GRAZIA Game Changers initiative honours visionaries who challenge the status quo across fashion, beauty, technology, the arts, and sports. Embodying the spirit of women uplifting women, last year’s trailblazers have personally selected this year’s honourees.
Ahead, we turn the spotlight on fashion entrepreneur Jamie QQ Wu. Wu is the co-founder of Modamorphosis, a multi-disciplinary company that aims to shape the future of fashion while championing innovative fashion designers and artists around the world.
What inspired you to pursue this path? Was there a defining moment that set you on this journey?
Having two children was a defining moment for me. The fashion industry that I fell in love with as a young teen in Shanghai—which forms a huge part of my self‐expression and my professional life—is, sadly, one of the most polluting industries in the world. The moment I gave birth to my children, that concern became almost a quest for me to want to contribute to fixing the challenges the industry faces. Something needs to be done to redefine the future of fashion. Through creative content, showcases, partnerships and participation in large‐scale public events such as the Fashion’s Alchemists exhibition, set to open in Singapore later this year, I hope to play a part in shifting how fashion is made, worn, consumed and perceived, in order to offer possible solutions to solve the waste crisis. This is a meaningful lifelong pursuit for me.
Have you ever faced a moment of self-doubt? How did you push past it?
Constantly! I’m constantly faced with doubts, but I have a bigger picture vision that drives me to overcome temporary setbacks or moments of doubt. I’m committed to realising my vision and goals.
Have you ever been told “no” along the way? How did you turn that into fuel for success?
All the time! Fashion’s Alchemists may seem farfetched to some, but we are now opening a world-first show featuring over 100 works by 50 groundbreaking designers and artists from across the globe at Gardens by the Bay.
What does success mean to you, and has that definition evolved over time?
The traditional box-ticking success, such as commercial success and social media and media exposure, are no longer as important to me today as they previously were. Today, success means making changes, being a gamechanger—doing something that shifts public perception and creates positive changes in the long run for a large community.
What’s a failure that turned out to be a blessing in disguise?
I haven’t regarded all of the projects I’ve been part of in my life as successes; I always think there’s a degree of failure to everything I’ve done, if you were to benchmark [them] against the traditional definitions of success. There are learnings from every one of those projects. I never think I’ve succeeded.
What’s one habit or ritual that keeps you grounded amid chaos?
I started doing yoga again. I also go for long walks and listen to mediative podcasts. And drink wine! Lots of wine!
What’s a system, standard, or stereotype you hope to completely rewrite?
That you have to succeed when you’re very young and that success is defined by being an extraordinary entrepreneur. I don’t believe in [taking the] traditional routes to success. One has to remain curious, to want to join the dots and define your own truth. I’m lucky to be an outlier. I’m very stubborn, and I’ve always wanted to march to the beat of my own drum.
What’s next for you? How do you plan to keep changing the game?
Come and see the Fashion’s Alchemists exhibition at Gardens by the Bay from 23 April. Through building this exhibition and platform, we are dedicating ourselves to fostering the magic that comes from the unadulterated creativity of the artists and designers who are inspiring and innovating the future of fashion. We hope to open people’s minds to an exciting new future.
