“I wear what makes me feel good,” said Freen Sarocha in her cover story with GRAZIA Singapore this year.

That statement explains why the Thai actress has such a versatile approach to her style. Of course, Freen is very much a Valentino girl; as brand ambassador, she effortlessly pulls off Alessandro Michele’s romantic and whimsical designs for the Italian fashion house. But when she’s not wearing Valentino’s coquette-core pieces like lace dresses, frilly skirts or bow-covered cardigans, Freen demonstrates a more grown-up and masculine side to her style.

We’re talking about her love for tailoring, of course. Freen Sarocha has a track record of wearing fantastic suits, which is no easy feat (or should we say fit?). There is much to consider when putting together a suit, from the cut of a jacket to the length of a pair of trousers. At 26 years old, Freen has already figured out the suit styles that work best for her.

Like a true It-girl, Freen doesn’t go for boring suits, either. She chooses tailored ensembles with bold colours and patterns, or she subverts the traditionally masculine suits with fresh, feminine touches in her styling. The result? The Gap star looks sophisticated and cool.

If you’re looking to shake up your own wardrobe with tailoring, read on. GRAZIA Singapore spotlights Freen Sarocha’s best styling tricks for wearing a suit.

Wear A Dramatic Skirt

Earlier this year, Freen Sarocha made history as the first Thai actress to attend the Met Gala—and she made her red carpet debut not with a gown but with a tailored ensemble. Following the gala’s dress code, Tailored For You, Freen donned a custom Valentino look, comprising a faux fur-trimmed jacket and a sweeping slit skirt with a train. A dramatic skirt is not what most people would think to wear with a blazer, but in doing so, Freen put a glamorous spin on eveningwear that you can consider for your next soirée.

Pattern On Pattern

Patterns may scare most people, but not Freen. In fact, the actress wore a Valentino suit crafted from the Italian luxury brand’s Toute la V jacquard. If you’re thinking of wearing a bold, geometric pattern like that, it’s best to commit to it from head to toe. In Freen’s case, she toned down the drama of her suit by sticking to neutral colours. Under her striking jacket, she wore a ruffled white blouse.

Think Pink

Subvert the suit with a colour that nobody expects. At the 4 Elements press conference in Bangkok this year, Freen stepped out in a powder pink ensemble that matched the look of her co-star, Becky. Freen’s blazer also came with a cinched waist and satin details, creating a look that exuded femininity.

Throw On Some Jeans

A blazer and jeans make a winning combo, and Freen is proof. In an off-duty outfit, the Thai star wore a boxy checkered jacket—a style that is very much borrowed from the boys—and made it casual by wearing a plain white tee and light-wash blue jeans underneath. Her outfit is “effortlessly simple”, as Freen wrote on her Instagram caption. It’s also very sharp, thanks to her choice of footwear: classic black pumps.

Go For Gradient

Besides opting for bold patterns, another way to shake things up with a suit is to play with colours. As seen on Freen, this ombre double-breasted jacket by the Thai fashion label Poem comes with a striking gradient design that goes from wine red to black. Freen plays up the drama of her look by wearing bold red lipstick too.

Put On Platforms

A tailored ensemble can visually elongate your body and create the illusion of height—if you wear the right shoes too, of course. Freen has figured this out, which is why you will often spot the actress wearing a suit while clad in a pair of Valentino’s VLogo Signature platform sandals, which come with towering 115mm heels. Freen’s choice of shoes don’t just make her look taller, but also adds to the ‘70s vibes that can be seen in her flared pants.

Add Some Rockstar Leather

One surefire way to turn up the heat with a classic black blazer? Pair it with a miniskirt. That’s what Freen did when she swapped black trousers for a leather skirt instead, creating an outfit that is edgy and cool. Complete the look with knee-high leather boots if you’re leaning into the rocker, indie sleaze look, or keep it preppy like Freen with a pair of loafers.
