As the heat continues to rise, the fashion set is swapping out their trusty sneakers and boots for a rotation of summer shoes. But while 2023 saw more romantic styles like ballet flats, sky-scraping platforms and Mary Jane shoes thanks to trends like balletcore and the release of Barbie, more casual variations are back in vogue this year.
Ballet flats have gotten a cool girl makeover for 2024 from the likes of Khaite and Alaïa. While leather and satin styles were more popular last year, 2024 sees the rise of netted versions, embellished with studs, buckles and embroidery.
The crystal-studded iteration from Khaite was a massive hit, and those featuring floral embroidery in particular have been spotted on Blackpink’s Jennie, who teamed them with a white minidress.
Other style mavens like Vietnamese content creator Hang Rutjes and stylist Lucy Alston prefer their netted ballet flats with light coloured denim.
Another celebrity-approved style for the summer? Fisherman sandals, as seen on Hailey Bieber and NCT’s Jaehyun. Its popularity is not unfounded: the design offers breathability and ease of movement in a fashion forward way. Take a cue from the stars and pair yours with longer socks and cuffed denim.
And, in line with styling trends like Tiktoker Allison Bornstein’s “wrong shoe theory“—where an outfit is paired with an unconventional choice of footwear—flip-flops are back.
According to stars like Ashley Olsen and content creators like Sandra Sauceda and Tine Van Cauwenberghe alike, the key is to partner them with relaxed yet tailored co-ords like button downs, trousers and structured bags.
