Hollywood has buzzed with the possibility of a sequel to the 2006 hit film, “The Devil Wears Prada” for what feels like forever. Finally, it appears that the wait might be over. Recent reports from Variety and Puck indicate that Disney is stepping up to produce the much-anticipated sequel, with at least two original stars gearing up for their return.

The Devil Wears Prada: Back but without Anne Hathaway?

Producer Wendy Finerman has successfully persuaded Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt to reprise their iconic roles. Streep will return as the formidable Miranda Priestly, the feared editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, and Blunt as her sharp former assistant, Emily Charlton. However, Anne Hathaway‘s involvement remains uncertain. While once open to the idea, Anne recently expressed doubts, calling her return “unlikely.” Yet, if the new plot centres on Miranda’s career twilight and her struggle with the shifting sands of magazine publishing, Hathaway’s absence could indeed make sense.

The storyline, penned by Aline Brosh McKenna, who also scripted the original film, introduces us to a Miranda at a crossroads. As traditional magazine publishing declines, she reaches out to her former assistant, now a senior executive in a major luxury group, in desperate need of advertising support.

Excitingly, Entertainment Weekly has revealed that discussions are also ongoing with Anne Hathaway and Stanley Tucci, who might rejoin the ensemble as Nigel. Additionally, David Frankel, the director of the original movie, is a potential candidate to helm the sequel.

A Lasting Impact on Culture

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the sequel, the enduring popularity of “The Devil Wears Prada” is undeniable. Emily Blunt, speaking to Josh Horowitz last February, suggested some things are better left untouched. “Sometimes things need to be cherished and preserved in that bubble. It’s perfectly fine as it is,” she remarked. Regardless, the legacy of “The Devil Wears Prada” continues to expand. This October, a musical adaptation, featuring music by Elton John and starring Vanessa Williams as Miranda, will debut in London following a preview in Plymouth this summer.

As developments unfold, it’s clear that the tale of “The Devil Wears Prada” continues to captivate and intrigue, potentially bringing together old faces and new storylines in a fresh chapter of this beloved narrative.
