For as long as I can remember, I’ve been drawn to the ocean. There’s something about watching the sea and hearing the waves lap against the shore that brings an instant sense of calm.
The irony? I cannot swim. Yet, like Moana, the sea calls to me.
Perhaps it isn’t ironic at all. Research shows that being by the ocean delivers measurable psychological and physiological benefits: lowered stress, enhanced creativity, and greater overall wellbeing.
Coined in 2014 by Californian marine biologist Dr Wallace J. Nichols, “blue mind” describes the meditative, restorative state people experience when they are near, in, on, or under water. It’s this philosophy that inspired The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands to introduce its Blue Prescription programme in 2024—a personalised initiative built around the healing power of the surrounding turquoise lagoon. In 2025, the programme expanded with the Deep Blue Boost—a series of activities led by visiting craft, wellness, and sustainability experts—alongside the Blue Rate and Blue Rituals, designed to offer a streamlined yet meaningful immersion.

With Marriott International’s luxury travel trends report highlighting rising demand for transformative wellbeing experiences, the resort now joins the Group’s new Luxury Wellbeing Series. Centred on Sleep, Nutrition, and Physical and Mental Wellbeing, the series also includes Mandapa, a RitzCarlton Reserve in Bali, and The St Regis Goa Resort in India.
What impressed me most, however, was just how personalised a stay at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands can be—perfect for both activity-driven travellers and those seeking deep, uninterrupted rest. As Marriott International’s Oriol Montal, regional vice-president, luxury, Asia Pacific (excluding China), notes, “affluent travellers are seeking impeccable, personalised, exceptional wellness experiences.” And this is something the resort delivers with ease.
For many, wellness conjures the familiar image of sunrise yoga or guided meditation. While those are certainly available, the Blue Prescription goes far beyond. Because wellness does not look the same for everyone, the team ensures every element of your stay is intentionally crafted to melt tension and restore inner balance.

After check-in—done in the privacy of your villa—the resort’s director of spa and wellness and executive chef stop by for a casual consultation to discuss nutrition, health history, lifestyle habits, and personal goals.
From there, a world of options opens up. Want to connect with nature? Join a guided snorkelling tour to spot eagle rays and hawksbill turtles. Prefer something gentler? Try a sunrise floating sound healing session, where you drift on an inflatable mattress as vibrations from singing bowls guide you into meditation. Feeling competitive? Head to the island’s tennis court for singles or doubles—gear, outfits, and shoes included.

Unsurprisingly, the highlight of any wellness journey is the spa. At The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands, that means entering the halo-shaped spa designed by Kerry Hill Architects, perched above the lagoon. Alongside invigorating scrubs and restorative facials, the spa features Bamford rituals from the U.K.-based body-care brand.
Among them, the B Balanced treatment stands out. More than a massage, it begins with guided breathing, followed by gentle bamboo tapping to boost circulation and promote lymphatic drainage. A focused lower-back massage relieves tension and supports healing, before a cold gua sha on the legs helps alleviate water retention. A cooling gel refreshes the senses, and a calming facial massage delivers a healthy glow.
For deeper rest, opt for the B Silent treatment. Created to improve sleep quality, it combines assisted stretches to release tight hips and lower back with a soothing massage to ease stiffness.

Nutrition plays an equally important role in wellbeing, and with seven dining venues, you’ll eat exceptionally well—from Italian at La Locanda and Chinese at Summer Pavilion to Japanese at Iwau, Mediterranean at the Beach Shack, Middle Eastern and North Indian at Arabesque, and Asian street food at Tum Tum (the latter two located at Fari Marina Village, an eight-minute boat ride away).
Hands-on travellers can join the Taste of the Maldives cooking class, preparing dishes using the catch of the day for a true sea-to-table experience. For something truly memorable, try a chakra-themed dining experience. Developed with Susy Markoe Schieffelin, founder of The Sound Healer’s Academy, the menu is themed around the body’s seven chakras, with pairings designed to balance energy and promote inner radiance.
Or begin the day with a picnic breakfast at Mystique Garden beneath a magnificent 30m banyan tree—fresh fruit, warm pastries, and the sound of the ocean included. (Although these latter two experiences aren’t part of the permanent dining slate, the team may be able to arrange them on request.)

Rest, naturally, sits at the heart of the Deep Blue philosophy. Led by Walailuck Kongsawat—affectionately known as Gift—the Balance of Stillness workshop creates space to rest, reset, and restore. No two sessions are alike; the content shifts depending on each guest’s needs.
Beyond an introduction to the sleep cycle, you’ll leave with practical techniques to cultivate restorative rest at home. Gift shared breathwork practices to quiet the mind, journaling tips for clarity, and guidance on crafting a wind-down routine and sleep sanctuary. For crystal enthusiasts, she also explains which stones support focus, calm, or stress relief.
And the care continues after sundown. A personalised turndown service awaits, complete with a warm bath and restorative chakra tea. With each passing day, I found myself breathing deeper and feeling lighter. More than a tailored wellness programme, this is a transformative journey that blends holistic treatments, nourishing food, and the healing power of the ocean. It was, quite literally, just what the doctor ordered.
