The first two and a half weeks of January could feel a little like you’re awakening from a dream. This is because the water and earth element zodiac signs are dominating the skies, so you can expect 2025 to begin at a steady, moderate pace, with some intuitive moments and flashes of emotive inspiration. Venus, the planet of beauty and relationships, enters ethereal Pisces on 3 January whilst energetic Mars, the planet of conquests, retrogrades into deep-feeling Cancer on 6 January.
Relationships thrive and revive when approached with tender, warm sensitivity. (A word to the wise: the Mars retrograde is ongoing till end February, so take extra precautions with any career- or business-related ventures.) Communicative Mercury joins the Sun in earthy Capricorn on 8 January: ground lofty emotions with a practical way of doing things and expressing yourself. Remember that less is more.
These nebulous water/earth energies reach a peak on 14 January with a gorgeous full moon in profoundly emotional Cancer. The moon is right at home in Cancer: feelings flow freely, and it’s a great time to reach out to loved ones. The Venus-Saturn conjunction in Pisces on 19 January continues with the good vibes, and adds sombre Saturn’s ever-present reminder that we are responsible for our life choices. Venus also rules our finances, so this is a great day to review investment portfolios and make smart money moves.
Then energies start shifting, big-time, when the sun enters noble-minded Aquarius on 20 January, forming a conjunction with transformative Pluto on 21 January. Something that had been hidden, denied or unknown could come to light around this time. The ante is raised on 29 January when articulate Mercury forms its own conjunction with Pluto. Mere hours later the same day, we have a new moon in Aquarius, offering us the opportunity to set plans and goals as we glide into the Lunar New Year of the Wood Snake. Gong Xi Fa Cai, everyone!

ARIES: Nine of Cups
Here’s a great card to start off the year, dear Aries! The Nine of Cups is one of the wish fulfilment cards in the tarot, and indicates great satisfaction with how your dreams have played out. 2024 saw you putting in the hard work to manifest your goals, and you’re about to receive all the good things coming your way. While you celebrate, the Nine of Cups also urges moderation with the festive feasting and drinking. Have fun!
TAURUS: Queen of Swords, reversed
Dear Taurus, you could be starting the year with lots on your plate—but keep calm and carry on, and your innate resilience will surely win the day. When the Queen of Swords appears upside-down, you could be facing a situation where you’ll need to ignore the noise around you; follow the lead of your own inner wisdom to bring about your highest good. Listen to the still, small voice of your intuition, and your clarity will come.
GEMINI: Six of Wands, reversed
A situation you’ve been working on, dear Gemini, might produce unexpected results. Maintain self-awareness, observe your environment, and you’ll avoid the pitfalls of both complacency and insecurity. With this card, things that were previously unknown could be revealed this month, especially if they occur around/during the Sun-Pluto conjunction on 21 January. Potential blind spots? False friends and hidden agendas.
CANCER: Page of Wands, reversed
Dear Cancer, a person, message or event around you could throw a spanner in the works, raising blood pressures and derailing progress. Refrain from petty retaliation; focus your energies on regaining clarity, joy and purposeful momentum. Slot in time for self-care, meditation and the release of old energies during the Full Moon in your sign on 14 January. Keep your eye on the prize, stay in your power, and you’ll be unshakeable.
LEO: Queen of Pentacles
This new year begins on a note of comfort and quiet strength, dear Leo! The Queen of Pentacles is here for you, indicating that you have much to look forward to in terms of career, finances, and personal relationships. At work, you could be catching the eye of a supportive benefactor. Looking for love? Someone could be coming your way with the best of intentions. Strengthen ties with the good folks in your life; everyone will benefit.
VIRGO: Temperance
Patience and moderation, dear Virgo, will set the stage for miracles. You could be putting in the hard work for a certain desired outcome to happen – with Temperance as your card, you are assured that things are going to get better. If you need to make a decision, remember that maintaining the status quo is also an option. If you’ve been feeling under the weather, your recovery can be expedited with a balanced lifestyle.
LIBRA: Knight of Wands, reversed
Dear Libra, you are starting the year with brisk determination in your step. 2025 might have its challenges, and the reversed Knight of Wands warns against unreliable people and/or projects that appear promising but fall through. However, these occasions only reveal the strong steel that underlies your amiable demeanour. Never give up on your goals – fight the good fight and you are destined to win. Go get ‘em, Libra!
SCORPIO: The Tower, reversed
Big changes lie ahead in your future, dear Scorpio – but yours is a soul that thrives under pressure. While the Tower often represents a major change that lies beyond your control, this card in reverse indicates that the disruptive influence of said change could be somewhat mitigated, and/or that a disaster will be avoided. Dear Scorpio, your innate strength and wisdom in making good choices will serve you well. Hang tight!
SAGITTARIUS: Two of Wands
Dear Sagittarius, you could be standing on the cusp of a great new beginning! Like the young ruler depicted in this card, you could be facing a situation where you’ll be weighing up the options before you make the best choices for a bright future. Some of you might be getting acquainted with exciting new opportunities—or people—on online platforms, so update your profile photos and put your best foot forward.
CAPRICORN: Nine of Wands
The ‘New Year, New You’ vibes might be proving elusive for you, dear Capricorn. Part of the reason for your weariness could be your busyness. While the firefighting never ends (and you take your responsibilities very seriously), you will benefit greatly from taking an occasional timeout and spoiling yourself—who doesn’t enjoy being pampered on their birthday, after all?—so do relax and indulge just a little, now that it’s your season!
AQUARIUS: Eight of Wands, reversed
Dear Aquarius, during the first half of this month you could be feeling a bit like a Ferrari stuck in quicksand: you’re putting in the hard work, but nothing seems to be showing for your efforts. In fact, you’ll also need to watch out for potential miscommunications and unexpected developments. Despite your challenges, remember to be kind to yourself. Take time out to breathe, stretch, and engage in self-care. You deserve to be happy!
PISCES: Ten of Wands
My dear Pisces! The ‘New Year, New You’ vibe might seem to have passed you by. But this sense of burnout has been a long time coming, and you are still doing your best to move forward with grace. You will certainly appreciate a well-deserved break, not only for your body but also your spirit. Try to restore your inner balance, dear Pisces, as 2025 seems poised to take you to another level of growth.
