The month of October is finally upon us, which means that spooky season is here. As we enter the last quarter of the year, it’s time once again to switch things up on your to-watch list. From creepy psychological thrillers that will have your hairs standing, to feel-good coming-of-age films to distract you from the haunted goodness of the month, we’ve rounded some of the best new shows to catch on Netflix and Disney+ this month. Plus, this month’s list includes a few mind-bending, dark features that you won’t soon forget. Ahead, our list of six series and movies to catch for occult October.
The Boy And The Heron
Any Studio Ghibli fans in the house? In case you missed it, the cult-favourite animation studio, which premiered The Boy And The Heron in theatres last year, has now released the film on Netflix. The story follows young Mahito (the titular Boy) as he struggles with the death of his mother, before encountering a talking heron who leads him into a fantastical realm where the living and the dead collide.

Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born
Set in the years following the Korean war in the 1950s, Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born features actress Kim Tae-ri as a young girl stuck in poverty. The series follows her life as she dreams of using her talent in singing to escape poverty and make it big as a celebrity. Based on a webtoon of the same name, the drama series is bound to tug at your heartstrings, as you see the world through the eyes of a girl who is willing to stake everything on her dream.

Hellbound: Season 2
The second season of the Korean dark fantasy series Hellbound is finally here. For those unacquainted, the premise of the show starts with the arrival of unearthly beings, who begin to deliver decrees that condemn individuals to hell. The beings’s actions give rise to an occult religious group, who believes in the concept of divine justice. Season two sees this religious group garnering even more support on earth, as things take a sinister turn.

The Platform 2
The sequel of the 2019 dystopian film The Platform features a troop of people trapped, once again, in vertical cells, where food is sent down floor by floor. Only this time, there is a new law in place: to only consume the food that you order. While the rule is idyllic in theory, cracks begin to form in the system when the ‘inmates’ find out that a mysterious leader is watching their every move.

Inside Out 2
If you’re not one for horror movies, this October, you can catch this feel-good film instead. Inside Out 2 follows the lovable emotions that live inside protagonist Riley’s mind, as she navigates her challenging teenage years. The sequel film sees the entrance of four new emotions in Riley’s life—Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui—as they join the old gang of Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust and Anger.

It’s What’s Inside
Get ready for spooky season with this new thriller. It’s What’s Inside is set at the pre-wedding reunion for a group of college buddies. Things take a turn for the creepy when an unexpected guest turns up, armed with a mysterious suitcase. This psychological thriller starring Alycia Debnam-Carey (of Fear The Walking Dead fame) will have you at the edge of your seat.
