The GRAZIA Game Changers initiative recognises the people who have been creating meaningful impact in Singapore and throughout Asia. This year, in celebration of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, we invited the honorees from our inaugural edition to pass the torch to a new class of talented and spirited individuals. Meet Trina Ng, the climate scientist who is contributing to vital research on the sea level rise in Singapore—and its future impacts.
What does the term “game changer” mean to you?
Trina Ng (TN): Someone who leaves an indelible mark, challenges the status quo with a vision, and sets a new standard for what is possible.
How did you discover your purpose in life?
TN: After the sudden loss of my mum to cancer two years ago, I came to a profound realisation about the fragility and preciousness of life. Her passing showed me that life is too short for regrets and playing it safe all the time. In honour of her, I decided that I only wanted to live my life full of purpose, passion and love.
What are the qualities that you most value in people? How do you embody them yourself?
TN: Resilience, authenticity, and courage. Being a junior climate scientist, I have made countless rookie mistakes along the way. Each misstep, big or small, serves as a test of my resilience. In those pivotal moments, I remain steadfast to my commitment to staying true to myself and perseverance.
How would you say you’ve played your part to be a game changer in the industry you’re in?
TN: My research centres on the pressing issue of rising sea levels in Singapore and Southeast Asia. In this nascent field for our region, I see my contributions as small steps forward in shaping adaptation and mitigation strategies against climate change. Beyond research, I have been actively involved in projects aimed at raising awareness about climate change and its impact on sea-level rise. Moreover, I have had the privilege of leading collaborative efforts that bring together diverse stakeholders to tackle climate-related challenges. It has been a journey of incremental progress, but I am proud to play a part in driving positive change in our community.
What have been the highlights and major challenges of that journey? How did you overcome each hurdle?
TN: Every achievement is accompanied by a journey marked with setbacks and unseen struggles. I have made my share of mistakes along the way, each one echoing the relentless voice of imposter syndrome. I learnt many lessons the hard way. Self-doubt would often hold me back, but amidst the storm, I always find solace in the unwavering support of friends and family. I recharge my strength with the refuge they provide. In the depths of difficulty, I remind myself that this is the path I have chosen, and it is okay to stumble sometimes. It is part of the journey. But with each setback, I glean lessons and emerge stronger, fueled by newfound courage and determination.
What are some changes you’d like to see in your industry and how would you see your role in influencing them?
TN: I envision a future where Singaporeans from all walks of life come together to confront the challenges of climate change, both through direct action and by championing sustainable practices in their everyday lives. In particular, I am inspired by the prospect of more young Singaporeans discovering their passion for climate science and embracing it as a career path. By nurturing a generation of dedicated climate advocates, we can work towards a more resilient and sustainable future for our nation and the planet.
What keeps you motivated and passionate about what you do?
TN: The intrinsic excitement of delving into research fuels my motivation on good days, as I immerse myself in the pursuit of knowledge and discovery. However, on challenging days when obstacles loom large, it is the enduring encouragement from my loved ones that keep me going. Their belief in me and my work propels me forward during such times, reminding me of the significance of what I do and reigniting my passion to persevere through adversity.
What is the most valuable piece of advice or life lesson that you’ve learned?
TN: I have learned that in life, nothing remains permanent. The biggest favour we could do for ourselves is learning the ability to adapt and find silver linings amidst change.
What do you hope people take away from your journey?
TN: Be relentless, be fearless, and take heart in every achievement and failure.
