On June 10, Tasha Low treated her fans to an exclusive behind-the-scenes glimpse of the filming of the much-anticipated Little Nyonya spinoff, Emerald Hill. In her Instagram post, she shared moments from the set, capturing the camaraderie between herself, Jojo Goh, and Zoe Tay in a scene from the show. This sneak peek has only heightened the excitement for the new series, which promises to be a rich continuation of the beloved saga that began with the critically acclaimed Little Nyonya.
Little Nyonya, Emerald Hill’s predecessor, first graced our screens in 2008, offering a look into the lives of a Peranakan family in Malacca. The series, set in the 1930s, successfully (and masterfully, might we add) wove a narrative that spanned over 70 years and multiple generations of three interconnected families. It was a story of love, loss, and cultural heritage that resonated deeply not only with its Singaporean audience but also with a broader Asian audience.
Fast forward almost two decades, and we are on the cusp of welcoming Emerald Hill, set for release in 2025. At the center of this new series is Tasha Low, who takes on the mantle of the new ‘Little Nyonya’, Zhang Xin Niang. Beginning as a homeless child, Xin Niang struggles to survive and support her foster mother, a role brought to life by Chen Liping. The plot thickens as Xin Niang discovers she is the long-lost daughter of the affluent Zhang household, leading to a reunion with her birth mother, played by Jesseca Liu.
But wait, there’s more! Another long-lost granddaughter of the Zhang family, played by Ferlyn G, is introduced, sure to add even more layers of intrigue and complex family dynamics to the narrative.
No compelling drama is complete without its antagonist, and Emerald Hill continues this tradition. Lin Meijiao’s unforgettable portrayal of the antagonist in Little Nyonya has set a high bar, and it seems only fitting that her daughter, Chantalle Ng, steps into the villainous role in Emerald Hill, promising a riveting performance that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
The star-studded cast of Emerald Hill includes some of the brightest talents in the industry: Romeo Tan, Sheila Sim, Tyler Ten, Zhang Zetong, Dawn Yeoh, Desmond Ng, Zhang Yaodong, Herman Keh, Zhai Siming, and 933 DJ Zhu Zeliang, among others.
Adding to the nostalgia, Jeanette Aw, the original Little Nyonya protagonist, is set to reprise her role as Yue Niang. While it remains unclear how significant her role will be in the spinoff, her return is a heartfelt nod to fans of the original series.
