Ahead of Jennie’s first full-length solo album Ruby, the Korean pop icon has announced that she has worked with Grammy award-winning artist Doechii for the song ExtraL—a collaboration fans never saw coming. When Jennie first broke the news of her album, she had already hinted that she would be working with a number of international artists that she admires, but who knew that that lineup would include Doechii?

Mark your calendars, ExtraL is coming your way sooner than you think; the song will be released on 21 February at 1 PM (Singapore time).

For those unacquainted, here’s a quick rundown of everything you need to know about the rising star. At the 67th Grammy Awards, Doechii took home three awards, including the trophy for Best New Artist. The 26-year-old has gone viral for quite a number of her tracks in recent years, including Denial Is A River and Yucky Blucky Fruitcake.

Striking and unabashed, the American rapper’s signature look comes through in visible face tape that she wears on her temples for a more “snatched” appearance. Most recently, Doechii drew attention on Tiktok for clapping back at critics and Internet folk who accused the singer of lip-syncing during her Grammys performance.

When two pop powerhouses collide, you can expect nothing short of girl-power magic—with fans already dubbing this project a “cultural reset”. From the short teaser that Jennie posted on her Instagram account, we hear Doechii’s distinct, dynamic voice spitting out the phrase, “Do my ladies run this?”, on repeat. While we don’t know much else about what ExtraL sounds like at this point, one thing is certain: the pop girl anthem is about to be one of the hottest releases of the year.

In addition to ExtraL with Doechii, Ruby is set to feature the talents of other major artists such as Childish Gambino, Kali Uchis and FKJ. The 15-track album will also include the song Handlebars with Dua Lipa, who worked with the girls of Blackpink for Kiss And Make Up in 2017. To drum up extra excitement for the album, Jennie has released a few songs off the album already—including Mantra, Zen and Love Hangover featuring the vocal talents of Dominic Fike.
