You probably have heard of Starship Entertainment. The Korean entertainment label is home to some of the biggest names in the K-pop scene: Monsta X, IVE, Cravity, KiiiKiii and many more. And now five years after its latest male group debut, the music label has introduced a new player that’s set to hold its own against some of the industry’s heavyweights: IDID.
The seven-member group just made their official debut last month with the release of their new album I did it, comprising eight tracks. Their title track Chan-Ran features an upbeat rhythm and highlight the rookie group’s vibrant, free-spirited energy. After being hand-selected from Starship Entertainment’s reality survival programme Debut’s Plan, their youthful exuberance is a bold declaration of the group’s attitude as they mark their mark as rookie idols.

Ahead, get to know the fresh-faced idols, as they sit down for a chat with GRAZIA Singapore. Here, the group chats about the significance of the name IDID, their career goals, and the artists they look to most for inspiration.

GRAZIA Singapore (GS): Congratulations on your debut! It must have been a long journey. Can you share more about your training process together?
Baek Junhyuk (BJH): After we were selected as the final members of IDID, all seven of us worked even harder to become better artists. We had our ups and downs but by supporting and encouraging one another, we were able to push through to debut as IDID.

GS: Tell us a little about each member of your group, what makes you all different? How do you then come together so well?
Chu Yoochan (CYC): We all have different characters and charms. Some members are more hyper, delicate, and charismatic on stage. IDID was able to become one team because we each complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
BJH: There are some members who naturally get along with and some who do not. To give an example, I’m really outgoing and like to play around but Minjae is quiet and calm. But because we went through the same challenges on Debut’s Plan, we got to understand one another and were able to unite as IDID at the end.
Park Seonghyeon (PSH): Not one person in our group has the same charm as another, so our fans can expect a variety of vocals, rap, and performance styles. We communicate with each other to gather our thoughts and come together even if we have different opinions.
Kim Minjae (KMJ): I think we are able to truly become one group because we regularly gather together and share our deepest thoughts.

GS: How does the name IDID resonate with the group, and how does it capture the group’s spirit as you enter the K-pop industry?
Jeong Semin (JSM): IDID is our determination to accomplish whatever we face no matter how hard it is. With our fans, our team name expands to “We did it”, expressing the accomplishments IDID and our fans will achieve together. As we step into the K-pop industry, the name IDID symbolises our passion and strong will to achieve what we want.

GS: Are there any K-pop idols you look up to, and why?
KMJ: I look up to Monsta X—I want IDID to become strong performers like them, and become a team with great teamwork that lasts for many years.
GS: How did it feel to perform at KCON Los Angeles for your international debut appearance?
Jang Yonghoon (JYH): It was an honour to perform on stage I had dreamed of, and to feel their passion! I can’t wait to go back and experience it again.
CYC: I honestly couldn’t believe it, even right before the performance. I was so nervous but hearing the cheers and support from our fans made my heart race. That moment is still the motivation that fuels my dream.
BJH: Performing at KCON LA before our debut was a huge pressure on me, and I worried a lot. However, I kept thinking about how we couldn’t miss this opportunity, so that IDID can finally show what we’ve prepared for our fans.

GS: Tell us more about your debut track Chan-Ran. What is your favourite part of the song?
PSH: My favourite line in Chan-Ran is “Even if I look clumsy now and then, so what?”. My favourite part of the choreography is the introduction where all seven of us have different gestures and are all acting differently.

GS: In the track, you sing of “finding your own pace”. Why is this theme of empowerment and embracing imperfection so important to the group as you make your debut?
JYH: Everyone has their own pace in life. Just as all seven of us had different experiences during our debut journey, we wanted to express the dazzling moment and the raw emotion we felt when we were finding IDID’s own path.

GS: Other than the main track Chan-Ran, is there any song on the new I Did It album that you guys love? How does it capture the group’s sound or energy?
KMJ: Beyond Chan-Ran, our pre-release single Step It Up has a strong sound that shows IDID’s passion and energy.
Park Wonbin (PWB): I would say the B-side track Slow Tide. The track expresses IDID’s fresh and bright image well.
JYH: I like Slow Tide too! I sang my line like a whisper to express the track’s melodic vibe.
GS: Where do you see the group in five years? Are there any big stages or festivals where you would like to perform?
PWB: I hope IDID will be well known globally with our unique music in five years, and hope that we’ll be performing at famous festivals like Lollapalooza.
GS: What can excited fans expect to see from you in the near future?
CYC: We are always planning special events where we can meet our fans up close. I cannot spoil it yet, but that exciting moment will come soon, so please stay tuned. See you soon!
