On the red carpet of the 82nd Golden Globes in Beverly Hills on Monday, Ariana Grande shedded her Glinda persona for a brand new image. Dressed in a pale yellow vintage Givenchy gown and opera gloves, the singer and actress set her Good Witch looks free, and channelled the energy of an iconic actress instead: Audrey Hepburn.
Now, rumours are swirling that Grande is manifesting her next major role as Hepburn in a possible upcoming biopic about the British actress, using method dressing—a technique that is becoming increasingly popular amongst the A-listers of Hollywood. Think Zendaya for Dune and Challengers, Timothée Chalamet for A Complete Unknown (the biopic of Bob Dylan) and Cynthia Erivo and Grande for their respective green and pink roles for Wicked.
For those unfamiliar, Givenchy and Hepburn shared a close bond when they were both alive, with the duo teaming up on countless occasions during Hepburn’s film career. At the Golden Globes, Grande not only opted for Givenchy, she also brought old Hollywood glamour into her hair and makeup.
For the hair, Grande chose to sweep her bangs to the side—a classic Hepburn style—and kept the rest of her locks up in a bouncy ponytail. She is still rocking her Glinda blonde hair but the colour has definitely deepened.
Part of Hepburn’s enduring appeal is her timeless grace and beauty. So for the makeup, Grande kept it simple too, with soft, natural tones. Her eyelids had a wash of a light champagne shimmer shadow, and she wore a soft pink gloss on the lips. Since the start of Grande’s method dressing days as Glinda from Wicked, she kept her signature winged liner, from her persona as a hit-making songstress, at bay. Plus, one of the most noticeable Hepburn-coded details was Grande’s brows. Short, stocky brows that taper off into a sharp point were one of Hepburn’s most distinct facial features.
Even before the Golden Globes, Grande was already toying with looks inspired by Hepburn. For the Palm Springs International Film Festival, the 31-year-old donned a bubble gown by Louis Vuitton, perhaps as an homage to Hepburn’s Givenchy haute couture dress in Love In The Afternoon. At the event, she sported a small chignon, with the same side-swept cropped bangs. Very Breakfast At Tiffany’s.
