If there’s one thing Ryan Murphy knows how to do, it’s bring American legends—both beloved and infamous—to the screen with a spellbinding flair. His latest project, American Love Story: Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and JFK Jr., is already stirring conversation, but not just for its starry ensemble. When early shots of Sarah Pidgeon (see below) in character as the iconic CBK surfaced in June, fashion purists were quick to critique the wardrobe details: a suspect polyester skirt here, an incorrectly sized Birkin there. The backlash was swift. But, as Murphy later clarified, those were merely “test shots.” Since then, things have taken a promising turn, as evidenced by some paparazzi photos from the set.

Finally, the wardrobe has begun to pay appropriate homage to the enduring style legacy of Bessette-Kennedy and JFK Jr, who both perished in a tragic plane crash in 1999.

Filming across New York City, Pidgeon has since appeared in sleek Prada nylon totes, chic tailoring, crisp shirting, and the kind of minimalist ‘90s silhouettes that the former Calvin Klein staffer made iconic. Meanwhile, Paul Kelly, cast as JFK Jr., nails the all-American aesthetic in classic suiting and laid-back athleticwear. Also on the cast is Naomi Watts, as Jackie O, who channels the very picture of timeless First Lady fashion.
As Murphy dramatises the intimate, often mythologised love story of America’s late golden couple, the fashion is playing a key supporting role. With every look, the production captures not just an era, but the very aura that made Bessette-Kennedy a reluctant yet unforgettable style icon.
Here, we round up the most talked-about looks from the set of American Love Story.
