It seems that all of Gen-Z has recently been captivated by matcha. The vibrant green powder from Japan has finally captured the attention of the world. From countless Tiktok videos on how to DIY your own frothy, creamy matcha latte at home, to matcha becoming a staple café offering in Singapore and beyond, Gen-Zs cannot get enough of matcha. And it’s hard to blame them.

With a rich, earthy taste that can be easily enjoyed straight or with milk, matcha provides us with a welcome break from coffee. Don’t be fooled by its tea-forward flavour though, matcha actually contains more caffeine compared to regular coffee. So in celebration of World Matcha Day on 2 May, here are the top cafés in Singapore to get your regular dose of matcha.

Kyō Kohee

Corporate CBD girls are definitely familiar with Kyō Kohee. Hailed as one of the highest-quality matcha cafés in Singapore, they have a wide range of different matcha types. If you’re feeling fancy, opt for their Ceremonial Grade Matcha, which costs a pretty penny but we promise is worth every cent. We also recommend you try their matcha sans milk—the quality will speak for itself.

Café Found

Inside Editor’s Market at Takashimaya lies a secret little café spot that is home to a standout matcha latte. With a perfect balance of creaminess and nutty notes, Found’s Matcha Latte is definitely worth a try if you’re in need of an afternoon pick-me-up in town.

Nana’s Green Tea

Don’t turn your nose up at chain stores that serve matcha. Nana’s Green Tea hails from Japan and serves up solid matcha beverages and desserts, so you can satisfy all your cravings in one place. If you only have space for one drink and one dessert, we recommend the Matcha Shiratama Sundae (which comes with chewy mochi) and the hot Matcha Latte for some contrast.

Matchaya

Another excellent tea house is Matchaya. The chain was started by a Singaporean man Kevin Chee, who wanted to fill the gap of specialty matcha houses in the local market. Now, Matchaya helms three stores in Singapore and even has international outposts in Indonesia. Here, opt for their Matcha (or even Houjicha) Soft Serve, and their Dirty Matcha Latte, which combines matcha with an espresso shot for a robust burst of flavour.

Kurasu

Kurasu may be known for their stellar coffee, but their matcha creations are just as outstanding. At their two locations in Singapore, Kurasu takes pride in pronounced, clean flavours which you can experience best through their Ceremonial Matcha. If you’re looking for something more refreshing, consider their Matcha Calpis Soda—the perfect treat for a hot day out on the town.

Hvala

Perhaps one of the most popular spots on this list is Hvala. This tea house is not only renowned for their quality matcha offerings, their zen, Japanese-inspired interiors also make each matcha experience all the more special. Here, we love their matcha gelato (which is available in a range of different intensities) on their dairy-free waffles. Mochi lovers will also enjoy their Zenzai dessert, which combines dango, azuki beans and a shot of matcha or hojicha.
