What happens when the worlds of balletcore and streetwear collide? You get the ballet sneaker: a hybrid shoe silhouette that is prettier than a sneaker, more versatile than a ballet flat, and is now seemingly everywhere.
Case in point: London fashion designer Simone Rocha translated her idea of “hardcore femininity” into the Ballerina Grip shoes, which are adorned with jewel embellishments and sequins while sporting sturdy rubber trek soles. Onitsuka Tiger offered its own ballet sneakers with the Mexico 66 Ballerina shoes, which were part of the brand’s collaboration with Patou last year. This year, the Japanese brand introduces the Mexico 66 TGRS (read “TGRS” as “tigress”). The shoes feature plenty of feminine touches, like double Mary Jane straps and Onitsuka Tiger’s signature stripes, which have been reimagined with floral-inspired scallop trims.
Puma, too, has drawn inspiration from classic Mary Janes with its new Speedcat Ballerina shoes, which feature elastic straps.. The shoes come in two-tone styles, like black and pink or white and black. There is also a sleek silver-and-white style that nods to racecar designs—and is clearly favoured by Dua Lipa.
Even luxury fashion brands are getting in on the fashion trend. This April, Louis Vuitton is launching the LV Sneakerina, which is remarkably lightweight and flexible thanks to its Italian “sacchetto” construction. Louis Vuitton’s new shoes are as stylish as they are sporty: the LV Sneakerina is offered in materials like suede, metallic leather, technical satin, and even the French brand’s iconic Monogram canvas.
