We fine-tune our skincare routines, track our steps, and keep up with the latest wellness trends—but when was the last time you checked in on your hearing health? In a world filled with high-volume playlists, buzzing group chats, and back-to-back Zoom calls, our ears work overtime.

According to the Singapore Association for the Deaf, an estimated 500,000 people in Singapore experience hearing loss—this isn’t just an issue for the elderly, but one that affects people of all ages.

This World Hearing Day, it’s time to turn down the noise (literally) and give them the care they deserve.

The good news? Protecting your hearing doesn’t mean sacrificing your love for music, podcasts, or deep conversations. With a few smart habits and the right tools, you can keep your ears in top shape for the long run.

Here’s how:

Use Noise-Canceling Headphones

Instead of drowning out background noise by cranking up the volume, opt for noise-canceling headphones or wireless earbuds. They create a bubble of clarity, allowing you to hear every detail without stressing your ears. Bonus: you’ll also feel less fatigued after long listening sessions.

Take a Hearing Test

Just like you check your eyesight, you should check your hearing too. Enter: the AirPods Pro 2. The AirPods Pro 2 makes it effortless with their built-in Hearing Test feature. Just find a quiet space, pop in your AirPods, and follow the steps on your iPhone or iPad (iOS 18.1 or later). In five minutes, you’ll get a detailed snapshot of your hearing health—and if needed, you can even export the results for a hearing specialist.

Use the Hearing Aid Feature

If your test suggests that you might need some hearing support, the Hearing Aid feature on AirPods Pro 2 can fine-tune sounds to match your needs. You can adjust settings like amplification, balance, and tone to make conversations and media clearer. To set it up, connect your AirPods, go to Settings, tap on your AirPods name, then select Hearing Assistance. Small adjustments over time will help you get the best experience.

Follow the 60/60 Rule

Your playlist might be fire, but blasting it for hours? Not so much. Follow the 60/60 rule: Keep your volume at 60% or lower, and listen for no more than 60 minutes at a time before taking a break. Long-term exposure to loud sound—even at moderate levels—can lead to hearing damage, so give your ears some rest.

Protect Your Ears at Loud Events

Love concerts and social events but worried about the noise? Loud Sound Reduction in Transparency Mode automatically lowers overly loud sounds without affecting the clarity of what you’re hearing. It can reduce sound exposure in environments (up to 110 dBA!), helping to protect your hearing without taking away from the experience.
