A girl’s first Chanel fashion show is always a special moment. Shye can tell you as much: the 22-year-old musician was invited to attend Chanel’s Cruise 2025 presentation in Hong Kong in November.
“This is my first fashion show in general, and it’s a big milestone,” Shye told GRAZIA Singapore when we caught up with her after the show at the Hong Kong Design Institute on 5 November. “I was very excited to receive the invitation, and also very nervous.”
Shye was among the many international stars who were there to see the French luxury brand’s replica runway show for the Cruise 2025 collection. Penelope Cruz and Chow Yun-Fat participated in the live Radio Chanel session that took place before the fashion show; Taiwanese actor Bolin Chen and Thai stars Baipor Thitiya and Blue Pongtiwat flew in for the event; and K-pop icon G-Dragon sat on the front row.
Shye was the only Singaporean celebrity to attend the Chanel show—a testament to her longstanding relationship with the maison. “From the very beginning, Chanel has been very supportive of me as an artist and a female music producer,” shared the GRAZIA Singapore cover star. “A lot of my milestones have been with Chanel: my first magazine feature, my first overseas music awards show, my first billboard in Times Square. I have always been either wearing Chanel or being supported by the brand. I’m very thankful to Chanel and its spirit of empowering women.”
Chanel’s Cruise 2025 collection, which was inspired by the French port city Marseille, spoke to Shye, who revealed that she spotted plenty of favourite looks on the runway. “I really loved the very first outfit we saw, which is the green tweed jacket with the hood,” she shared. “I think the hood is so quirky and cheeky, and that’s what I love about the collection in general. It’s so wearable and so fun.”
Presented in Hong Kong, one could see how Chanel’s Cruise 2025 collection is as ideal for the city as the seaside destination that it was originally presented in. Shye’s exclusive photo diary with GRAZIA Singapore emphasised that connection: the Chanel ensembles that she wore around Hong Kong were as vibrant as the energy that runs through the city.
“I think that many people, when they think of Hong Kong, think of the city in the night time, with the lights and everything,” said Shye. “But even during the day, there’s a lot going on.”
The singer’s outfits included a silver jacket and top paired with a matching miniskirt, and the aforementioned green tweed suit—all of which stood out against the streets.
Hong Kong is a character itself, as emphasised during Chanel’s series of talks on cinema held ahead of the fashion show; in films, the city often serves as a backdrop for special, or spontaneous, connections. (This, too, is seen in Audrey Diwan’s short film Modern Flirt, commissioned by Chanel.) The dreamy, romantic quality that Hong Kong inspires can be found in Chanel’s Cruise 2025 collection, namely in the white, broderie anglaise pieces and the floaty ruffled tunic worn by Shye.
“I’m quite easygoing, I just like to wander around and see where it takes me,” she said. “I think that’s something I would love to do when I come back to Hong Kong.”
In that sense, Shye perfectly embodies her idea of the Chanel girl: someone who is independent, bold, and full of wonder.
Ahead, watch for a glimpse of Shye’s journey in Hong Kong with Chanel, including attending a private dinner at the famed China Club with fellow celebrity guests, trying her hand at painting mahjong tiles, and attending the glitzy Cruise 2025 fashion show at the Hong Kong Design Institute.
Chanel’s Cruise 2025 collection is available in Singapore boutiques from 20 November 2024.
