Inside Rebecca Eu And Kin Hui’s “Asian Fairytale” Wedding In Bali

The Island of the Gods was the perfect setting for Rebecca Eu and Kin Hui’s picturesque nuptials that married tropical Asian aesthetics with European fairytale glamour

GRAZIA Singapore (GS): How did you approach planning your wedding?

Rebecca Eu (RE): I approached planning my wedding with the idea of reflecting our values as a couple, and our creative side as a couple, to our friends and family; and we really just wanted people to have a good time.

GS: What was the theme of your wedding day?

RE: I really wanted to create this image of a fairytale wedding that I’ve always had in my head, but make it a little bit more Singaporean with the colonial elements inspired by Black and White Houses. That’s why we had the black and white tiles, the tropical trees, and those elements really brought my vision to life.

For the tea ceremony, the inspiration was really again, natural elements from Singapore that I love like rattan, the tropical trees, and tropical birds.

GS: What were some of the creative touches that you brought to your wedding?

RE: I love illustrating, so this was really my chance to be a little bit more creative and fun and share that with everyone that I love. I made these greeting cards as a thoughtful thank you gift for people coming to the wedding—they were inspired by little inside jokes we wanted to share with our friends and family.

GS: What were some of the values that you wanted to bring across on your wedding day?

RE: Sustainability was one. It was really just making sure there was minimum waste at the wedding and that we weren’t being excessive. Looking in, I think a lot of people would describe it as quite an extravagant, opulent wedding, but actually, I would like to say it was very thoughtfully done. The food that we didn’t consume was given to people in need; I encouraged having potted plants versus cut flowers, and just not creating so much waste.

GS: Tell us about your wedding dress and outfits throughout the day.

RE: My wedding ceremony dress and a few other dresses are from The Ivory Bridal. I chose to go with them because I know that I’m really only going to wear this dress once, and I still wanted something really high quality, really beautiful, because I would cherish these memories forever.

For the tea ceremony, I wore a hand-embroidered qun kwa (traditional Chinese wedding attire) that was passed down from my great-grandmother for the tea ceremony. We didn’t know where this garment had gone to, but we only recently recovered it from a relative based in the US, so this garment will stay in the family now. I felt so honoured that I got to wear it.

GS: What about your jewellery?

RE: A lot of it was actually heirlooms that have been passed down from my grandmother and my mum. My mum and I love jewellery and she incorporated this brooch into a design for this necklace that she wanted me to wear on my wedding day—that was so special, because it was a part of my grandmother, a part of my mum, and then on me. I wore Akoya pearls for the morning ceremony—that’s something I chose for myself because I love pearls, and it’s such a simple, timeless addition to that bridal vision. A lot of the jewellery I wore is also from Rinn, like my diamond studs. Going to Bali, I didn’t want to bring a lot of expensive stuff with me, so lab-grown diamond jewellery was a really great option.

GS: Describe your hair and makeup.

RE: I wanted to go with something really timeless, nothing too extravagant or fussy. I went for a half-updo wavy hair, just really elegant and really feminine for the wedding ceremony in the morning, and then we did an updo for the tea ceremony. I wanted to have that glowy look so my makeup wasn’t too heavy at all. I wanted makeup that would wear really well in the humidity, and that wouldn’t look cakey or tired by the end of the night. For the wedding dinner, I had a little bit more fun with glittery, sparkly makeup.

GS: What shoes did you wear?

RE: My shoes were from Roger Vivier—I had always known that I wanted a really classic pair of shoes for my wedding day and I have been obsessed with that classic Roger Vivier buckle for the longest time.

GS: What about Kin’s outfits?

RE: For the morning ceremony, Kin wore a white tuxedo jacket with black lapels from Hugo Boss, and he had some shirts tailored from a private tailor. They used this sweat wicking fabric, which was perfect for the weather. And then I found him this really lovely Giorgio Amani jacket to wear at night.
