Under the historic Gateway of India in Mumbai, Maria Grazia Chiuri revived an old connection for Dior’s groundbreaking Pre-Fall 2023 presentation. In a move never undertaken by a luxury house, Dior brought figures in fashion to the country’s largest city to celebrate the invaluable work that comes out of India by curating a collection that puts traditional artistry in the spotlight.
Live-streamed across the world, Chiuri’s mission to draw the world’s attention to India, a place she and Dior have long held close ties to, was realised in a visual journey that enabled all to see the skill and brilliance that has always captivated the fashion world but not always been recognised as such. A total of ninety-nine breathtaking looks were sent onto a runway flanked by artful floral arrangements and tea-light candles. As the galvanizing sounds of traditional live music boomed, models entered the light through a towering custom archway draped in hand embroidery. Its work was entirely crafted by the Chanakya School of Embroidery, an atelier and school for women that Chiuri has helped to open up—but this work was only a teaser of what was in store.
Looks would go on to boast some of the most vivid colours and intricate embroidery we’ve ever seen on runways. Even Dior’s most classic silhouettes were dipped in dyes, micro-beading and eye-popping hues that highlighted the seamless work behind the clothes. Nods to the nation were not lost in the Italian house’s eye, but put front and centre with tigers, peacocks, shocking pinks and true indigos. Details were not hidden away but proudly displayed to champion the unmatched craftsmanship that has long-held the house’s heart.
The result was a delight for the senses and a true feast for the eyes. Ahead, our favourite looks from the Dior Fall 2023 show.
