The Abbey Yung Method: Singapore Edition, and exactly where to find the products

The viral 11-step haircare system has taken over TikTok. Here's how to do it entirely with products available right here. Buckle up, it's a long one.

At some point in the last year, a significant portion of TikTok became very invested in disulfide bonds. In case you missed it, a disulfide bond is the internal protein structure that gives hair its strength. When enough of them break through bleaching, heat, colouring, and general life, you end up with hair that snaps, frizzes, and refuses to behave regardless of what you pour on it. The person responsible for making this genuinely interesting to millions of people is Abbey Yung, an American certified trichologist with famously long, shiny, colour-treated hair and an admirably low tolerance for the kind of fear-mongering that has convinced an entire generation that sulfates are war crimes. Her method—eleven steps, modular by design, built around repair rather than damage control—went viral in early 2025 and has since been attempted by enough people that its results are very well documented. The result? It works.

The problem, for us in Singapore, is that most of the product recommendations are built around American drugstores and American budgets. Singapore has different retailers, a different climate, and hair that has been doing its best in 33-degree humidity since long before anyone on TikTok told it what a clarifying shampoo was. So here is the Singapore edition: every step, every category, and the best products you can actually buy here. You do not need all eleven. But you probably need more than you think.

Who Is Abbey Yung?

Abbey Yung is a certified trichologist, meaning she has professional training in scalp and hair health rather than simply a ring light and strong opinions. Her approach is openly pro-sulfates, pro-silicones, and pro-washing your hair as often as you actually need to. In a world where beauty influencers have turned a fear of anything ending in ‘-xane’ or ‘-cone’ into content, she is one of the few pushing back with genuine scientific grounding. The method emerged from her own experience dealing with severe breakage and damage, which gives it a practical rather than theoretical quality: these are not steps designed by someone whose hair has never suffered. They are especially well-suited to high-porosity hair, meaning hair that has been coloured, bleached, heat-styled, or simply exposed to years of environmental stress. In Singapore, where UV radiation is intense year-round, colour treatments are common, and the humidity does what it does, high-porosity hair is essentially the default.

The Philosophy

The Abbey Yung Method rests on three ideas that sound simple and are, in practice, harder to consistently execute than they appear. First, repair before you do anything else. Broken bonds are the source of most damage and breakage, and no amount of conditioning will fix what bond repair treatments address at a molecular level. Products like Olaplex and K18 reconnect broken protein chains rather than masking over them. Second, clean properly. Product buildup, sebum, and mineral deposits from tap water all sit on the scalp and prevent treatments from absorbing; a genuine clarifying shampoo, used at least once a week, is non-negotiable. Third, protect every single time. A leave-in conditioner with heat protection is not optional, and the technique matters as much as the product: applied in sections, combing through each strand, rather than a cursory spritz and a vague hope. Abbey is also clear that the method is modular, not mandatory. As she puts it, “The method is meant to work for you. You aren’t meant to work for the method.” Can’t argue with that.

The Eleven Steps

STEP 1: Pre-Shampoo Bond Repair Treatment
Optional recommended twice a week for damaged hair

Applied to dry hair at least ten minutes before washing, this step gives broken bonds a head start on rebuilding before the shampoo strips anything away. Think of it as structural work before the clean rather than after. It improves elasticity, reduces breakage, and makes everything that follows more effective. Anyone with colour-treated, bleached, heat-damaged, or generally fragile hair should start here. If your hair snaps easily or has lost its bounce, this is the step most likely to change that over time. It requires patience: bond repair products work cumulatively rather than overnight, and the first few washes may not feel dramatically different. Give it a month before you decide whether it is working.

Pre-Shampoo Bond Repair Treatments in Singapore: Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector is the gold standard, available on Shopee, Sephora Singapore, Watsons, Amazon SG, and Venus Beauty. Apply before shampooing and leave for anywhere between ten minutes and several hours. K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask, also at Sephora Singapore, Amazon SG, and Venus Beauty, can double as a pre-wash treatment, and because it is highly concentrated, a small amount goes a long way. The bottle lasts considerably longer when used this way.

STEP 2: Pre-Shampoo Oil Treatment
Optional

Applied to mid-lengths and ends at least twenty minutes before washing, oil creates a protective barrier that limits the amount of water the hair absorbs during shampooing. This matters because water causes the hair shaft to swell, and repeated swelling is a genuine source of mechanical damage over time. Abbey recommends skipping this on wash days when you plan to use a post-wash bond repair treatment in Step 7. The two are designed to be rotated rather than stacked. The scalp does not need oil unless it is particularly dry or flaky; keep this focused on the lengths and ends.

Pre-Shampoo Hair Oil Treatments in Singapore: Moroccanoil Treatment, available on Shopee, at Sephora Singapore, and Venus Beauty, is the cult argan oil treatment that works equally well as a pre-wash oil and a finishing product. OGX Penetrating Argan Oil of Morocco or OGX Coconut Miracle Oil, both at Venus Beauty, are Abbey’s own accessible picks for this step. They’re lightweight, fast-absorbing oils that create the pre-wash barrier without the weight of heavier treatments. For a more accessible option, plain coconut oil from any supermarket or pharmacy is one of the most thoroughly researched pre-wash oils available and reduces protein loss during washing more effectively than most products at any price point.

STEP 3: Clarifying Shampoo
At least once a week

This is the step most people are skipping and the one most likely to be the reason their other products are not working. A clarifying shampoo removes product buildup, excess sebum, mineral deposits from tap water, and everything else sitting on the hair and scalp that prevents treatments from absorbing properly. Abbey describes it as a deep clean rather than a wash, and the distinction is meaningful. In Singapore, where heat accelerates sebum production and product layers accumulate faster than in cooler climates, clarifying is more important than the general guidance suggests. Look for non-conditioning formulas labelled clarifying or purifying. If mineral buildup from hard water is a concern, chelating formulas remove deposits more thoroughly.

Clarifying Shampoos in Singapore: OUAI Detox Shampoo, available at Sephora Singapore, uses apple cider vinegar, witch hazel, and charcoal for an exceptionally thorough cleanse. Olaplex No. 4C Bond Maintenance Clarifying Shampoo at Sephora Singapore and Venus Beauty combines clarifying with bond-building technology, which is efficient if you want fewer steps. Redken Hair Cleansing Cream Shampoo at Venus Beauty is a chelating clarifying formula that removes hard water minerals (copper, iron, and calcium) alongside product buildup, making it the professional-grade option for readers with persistent mineral deposits from Singapore’s tap water. For a more accessible option, Pantene Micellar Detox is available at Venus Beauty and delivers a genuinely clean scalp.

STEP 4: Non-Clarifying Shampoo
As needed on non-clarifying wash days

Your everyday shampoo, alternated with the clarifying formula across wash days rather than replacing it. Abbey also recommends rotating in a medicated shampoo if you experience scalp concerns — dandruff, itchiness, persistent flaking — not as a replacement for either of the above but as a third option in the rotation. Look for hydrating, repairing, or colour-safe formulas with ingredients like panthenol, hydrolysed proteins, and amino acids.

Non-Clarifying Shampoos in Singapore: The OUAI shampoo range at Sephora Singapore is categorised by hair type rather than just concern, which makes product selection considerably easier than most ranges. Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Shampoo, at Sephora Singapore, Shopee, and Venus Beauty, is particularly well-suited to colour-treated hair. Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate Shampoo at Venus Beauty suits colour-treated and chemically processed hair, using citric acid and a Bonding Care Complex to rebalance pH and reinforce weakened bonds with every wash. For a more accessible daily option, LUCIDO-L Re* High Damage Repair Shampoo at Watsons uses Japan’s Acid-Heat Treatment technology to repair and smooth rough, damaged hair while gently cleansing. For the medicated rotation, Head and Shoulders Clean and Balanced at Watsons, Guardian, and Venus Beauty contains zinc pyrithione for scalp irritation and is Abbey’s own recommended accessible option. Selsun Blue, also at Guardian, Watsons, Amazon SG, and Venus Beauty, contains selenium sulfide for more persistent scalp concerns.

STEP 5: In-Shower Bond Repair Treatment
At least once a week

Applied post-shampoo and left on briefly before rinsing, or left in entirely depending on the product, this is the in-wash repair step that complements rather than replaces the pre-wash treatment in Step 1. The two work at the same structural level but at different points in the washing process, and using both, at least on wash days when hair is particularly stressed, compounds the repair effect over time. Look for products containing scientifically proven bond-building active compounds like Olaplex’s bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate, or K18’s K18Peptide. These are the actives with genuine clinical backing; anything else claiming bond repair should be viewed with appropriate scepticism.

@abbeyyung The Abbey Yung Method Step #5– Post-Shampoo Bond Repair Treatments! I get a lot of questions about why I use these kinds of treatments after shampoo so I wanted to address that here in addition to my top recs & personal routine with them! In-Shower Bond Repair Treatments in Singapore: Olaplex No. 5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner at Sephora Singapore, Amazon SG, and Venus Beauty works double duty as both conditioner and bond repair. K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask — applied after shampooing to towel-dried hair, not rinsed out, and left for four minutes — is Abbey’s primary recommendation for this step, particularly for the first four to six washes of the routine.

STEP 6: Conditioning Treatment, Gloss, or Mask
Every wash

This is where moisture returns and the cuticle gets smoothed. Abbey breaks conditioning into three sub-categories: a gloss or laminating rinse for instant shine and lightness; a regular conditioner for everyday moisture; and a mask for intensive repair and deep hydration. The categories are not mutually exclusive, and she recommends combining a gloss with a conditioner, or a gloss with a mask, on days when the hair needs extra attention. The rule is mid-lengths and ends only, never at the root, and enough time for the product to actually do something before you rinse it out.

Conditioning Treatments, Glosses and Masks in Singapore: For glosses, Kérastase Gloss Absolu Insta-Glaze Conditioner at Sephora Singapore delivers an immediate glass-hair finish. L’Oréal Wonder Waters, available at Venus Beauty, uses the same lamellar technology at a significantly more accessible price point. For conditioners, the OUAI range at Sephora Singapore covers fine, medium, and thick hair with formulas that are clean and genuinely effective. Pantene Miracle Intensive Serum Mask Bond Repair at Watsons and Guardian is protein-rich and one of Abbey’s own affordable picks. For masks, Olaplex No. 8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask at Venus Beauty combines bond-building and deep conditioning; leave on for ten minutes and rinse. For the most accessible mask option in this step, LUCIDO-L Re* High Damage Repair Hair Mask at Watsons uses acidic ingredients activated by styling heat to smooth and repair the cuticle; a meaningful result at a drugstore price point.

STEP 7: Post-Wash Bond Repair Treatment
Optional, one to two times a week

A leave-in or rinse-out bond treatment applied after washing and towel-drying, before any other leave-in products. This is a separate layer of structural repair, added for particularly stressed hair, and Abbey recommends waiting around ten minutes after application before layering anything else. She also recommends skipping it on days when you have done a pre-wash oil treatment in Step 2—the two are rotated rather than combined. If your hair is in decent condition, this step can stay optional indefinitely. If you are working through significant damage, this is where that recovery accelerates.

@abbeyyung The Abbey Yung Method Step 7! Again, keep in mind that you absolutely do not need to be using all of these treatments. My goal is to test out as many as possible to help you find options you love! Product: @Living Proof, Inc. Post-Wash Bond Repair Treatments in Singapore: L’Oréal Professionnel Absolut Repair Molecular Leave-In Mask at Venus Beauty uses a patented 2% Peptides Bonder—individual peptide components broken down small enough to penetrate the hair fibre directly—alongside five amino acids to rebuild the hair’s macromolecular structure rather than simply coating the surface. Olaplex No. 0 Intensive Bond Building Treatment at Sephora Singapore and Venus Beauty is used in combination with No. 3—apply No. 0 first, then No. 3 on top—and intensifies bond repair significantly for the most damaged hair.

STEP 8: Leave-In Conditioner and Heat Protectant
Every wash, without exception

This is the non-negotiable. A leave-in conditioning spray applied in sections, combing the product through each one before moving to the next, ensuring every strand is coated rather than just the surface of the hair. The spray format is deliberate and Abbey argues that sprays distribute far more evenly than creams or oils, leaving no missed sections and no uneven coverage. Heat protection is built into this step. In Singapore, where humidity-induced frizz is a daily reality and air conditioning creates an equally aggressive swing in the other direction, a leave-in that genuinely seals the cuticle is doing more work than it does in almost any other climate.

Leave-In Conditioners and Heat Protectants in Singapore: For fine hair, Pantene Miracle Rescue 10-in-1 Leave-In Spray, available on Amazon SG, is Abbey’s own recommended accessible option. For medium hair, Moroccanoil All-In-One Leave-In Conditioner at Sephora Singapore, and Venus Beauty is argan oil-infused, lightweight, and handles humidity well. For thick or coarse hair, Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat and UV Protective Primer at Amazon SG also provides UV protection—a meaningful bonus in Singapore’s year-round sun exposure. Olaplex No. 6 Bond Smoother at Sephora Singapore and Venus Beauty is a leave-in styling cream with bond-building actives and is excellent for thick or high-porosity hair.

STEP 9: Styling Products
Optional, before heat styling

For those who blow-dry or heat-style, this step adds texture, volume, or hold before heat is applied. Dry sprays, volumising mousses, and texturising products all belong here. It is genuinely optional. If you air-dry or do not heat-style, skip it entirely.

@abbeyyung The Abbey Yung Method Step 9! I debated including this as part of the official method because this step is not focused on hair health at all and completely based on personal preference, hair type, hair concerns, etc. BUT because I’ve seen so many questions about whether or not you can follow this method or use my product recommendations for specific hair types, it felt important to call out! You can 100% use whatever styling products you want in any order that works best for you as part of this routine. ALSO- let me know what styling products you’d like me to test and review. This is definitely the category I have the most room to explore now that I’ve worked through testing on so many other categories 😊 Products Mentioned: K18 Astro Lift Volume Spray Tresemme Total Volume Mousse R&Co Grasp Shaping Balm Living Proof Texture Spray Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray Tresemme Dry Texture Spray #abbeyyungmethod #hairroutine #hairstyling ♬ original sound – Abbey Yung

Hair Styling Products in Singapore: OUAI Air Dry Foam at Sephora Singapore is lightweight and frizz-fighting with soft volume and no crunch. Moroccanoil Dry Texture Spray at Sephora Singapore adds texture and movement to styles post-blowout. For an accessible finishing option that does more than seal, LUCIDO-L Re* Hair Oil and Re* Hair Milk at Watsons uses Acid-Heat Treatment technology, meaning the repair work continues during blow-drying rather than stopping at the rinse.

STEP 10: Style Sealers
Optional, after heat styling

The finishing step. Serums, oils, creams, and lotions applied after heat styling to seal the cuticle, lock in shine, and smooth any remaining frizz. Mid-lengths and ends only, never at the root. A small amount is almost always enough. This is a step where more is emphatically not better.

@abbeyyung The Abbey Yung Method Step 10! The final but completely optional step in this wash day routine. Style Sealers and Hair Serums in Singapore: Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil at Sephora Singapore and Venus Beauty is concentrated and weightless, adding mirror shine with two to three drops on dry hair after styling. Moroccanoil Treatment available on Shopee, Amazon SG, Sephora Singapore, and Venus Beauty remains the classic finishing oil for a reason. OUAI Hair Oil at Sephora Singapore is ultra-lightweight with ama oil, borage oil, and baobab seed oil. It adds shine without heaviness, which makes it particularly well-suited to Singapore’s climate. Olaplex No. 9 Bond Protector Nourishing Hair Serum at Sephora Singapore and Venus Beauty is a silicone-free antioxidant serum that provides pollution defence alongside frizz control.

STEP 11: Between-Wash Care
As needed

This is everything between wash days. Dry shampoo to extend time between washes, heat protection if you are re-styling, and anything needed to keep hair looking and feeling presentable. Abbey is explicit that dry shampoo should never replace actual washing, only delay it, which is worth stating plainly given how commonly it is used as a substitute.

@abbeyyung The Abbey Yung Method Step 11! The final (& also completely optional) step in this haircare routine- between-wash care! This step is specifically for those of you that feel like your hair needs some extra help between washes. If it starts looking and feeling dull, dry and tangled and you want to make it softer, smoother, and shinier, re-conditioning on your lengths & ends will help tons. If you heat style between washes, I highly recommend applying a heat protectant. And if you want to use dry shampoo to refresh greasy roots… you absolutely can! As long as you’re not using dry shampoo to replace a wash day I think it’s totally fine to use. Each of these 3 steps are optional and completely dependent on how your hair is feeling. You could do just 1 of these steps, 2, all 3, or none. Some weeks I use dry shampoo, others I don’t. Some days I need to re-apply oil, other’s I don’t. I’m sure you get it by now but in case you’re new here… there are truly no “rules” with this method. The whole purpose is to help you build a routine that works best for you. Stay tuned for much more! xx #abbeyyungmethod #hairroutine #haircareroutine ♬ original sound – Abbey Yung

Between-Wash Hair Care Products in Singapore: Olaplex No. 4D Clean Volume Detox Dry Shampoo at Sephora Singapore absorbs oil without leaving a white cast, which matters on darker hair. K18 AirWash Dry Shampoo at Sephora Singapore is a non-aerosol formula that eliminates odour and absorbs oil without residue. Batiste Dry Shampoo at Guardian, Watsons, and Venus Beauty is the most accessible option and one of the most effective dry shampoos at any price point. For heat protection between washes, reach back to the leave-in spray from Step 8.

Adapting The Abbey Yung Method For Singapore

A few things are worth saying specifically for this climate. The clarifying step matters more here than it does almost anywhere else: heat accelerates sebum production, product layers accumulate faster, and the combination of outdoor humidity and indoor air conditioning puts the hair and scalp through a daily range of conditions that cooler, drier climates simply do not. If you take one thing from the method, let it be the clarifying shampoo used consistently. UV damage is equally relevant: Singapore sits 1.3 degrees north of the equator, which means hair is exposed to year-round UV radiation at an intensity that fades colour, dries out the cuticle, and weakens bonds progressively. Prioritise leave-ins and finishing oils that carry UV filters. The Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer explicitly provides UV protection, as does Moroccanoil Treatment. And for frizz, the combination of bond repair and silicone-containing leave-ins that sits at the heart of the method is genuinely effective here. Not because it is magic, but because a properly sealed cuticle has fewer entry points for humidity to work with.

Where To Shop

So naturally, that was a lot to take in. It’s a lot of steps and a lot of products. But if you’re considering trying out a step or redoing your whole routine, here’s a quick rundown of where to shop for what, and which brands you can get at each retailer: Sephora Singapore carries K18, Olaplex, OUAI, Moroccanoil, Kérastase, across ION Orchard, VivoCity, Raffles City, and online at sephora.sg. Watsons island-wide stocks Pantene, Batiste, Head and Shoulders, Selsun Blue, and LUCIDO-L. Guardian carries Pantene, Head and Shoulders, and Batiste. Venus Beauty, available online at venusbeauty.com.sg and in stores island-wide, is the most comprehensive single destination for this routine: they stock Olaplex, K18, Kérastase, Moroccanoil, Redken, L’Oréal Professionnel, L’Oréal Wonder Waters, OGX, Pantene, Head and Shoulders, Selsun Blue, Batiste, and LUCIDO-L, all in one place, spanning drugstore, mass-market Japanese haircare, and professional salon brands. And lastly, Amazon.sg stocks a wide selection of this routine online, including Olaplex, K18, Moroccanoil Treatment, Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer, Pantene Miracle Rescue 10-in-1 Leave-In Spray, Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate Leave-In Treatment, L’Oréal Elvive Wonder Waters, Batiste, and Selsun Blue. Prices and shipping times vary across all retailers, but you could wait for their next sale and splurge if you’re really invested in the best hair of your life.

The Bottom Line

The Abbey Yung Method is not a shortcut, and it will not transform damaged hair in a single wash day. What it offers is more useful than that: a structured, science-backed framework for making consistent decisions about haircare rather than reaching for whatever is closest in the shower and hoping for the best. In Singapore, where UV exposure, humidity, and salon culture create ideal conditions for accumulated hair damage, the method is well-suited to the context. You do not need all eleven steps. You do not need the most expensive products. You need a clarifying shampoo you will actually use weekly, a leave-in spray you will actually apply in sections, and enough patience to let bond repair products do their cumulative work. The rest is yours to build from there.
